Several of our clinicians are privileged to work with First Responders, RCMP and Military Veterans on challenges related to occupational stress, prevention and treatment of PTSD, and psychological assessments.
At Becker Burrows & Associates, we believe that every client is unique and deserves a personalized treatment plan. Our therapists work closely with each client to develop a plan that suits their individual needs, goals, and preferences. We use evidence-based practices and regularly review progress to ensure our clients are getting the most effective treatment possible.
We provide psychoeducational and autism assessments for children, adolescents, and adults who are seeking to better understand the ways they learn, and to identify and address barriers to academic and occupational success.

Sarah believes that her role as a psychologist involves walking alongside her clients while offering an objective and informed perspective. Because she often sees people who are seeking change, her goal is to help clients identify which patterns in their lives are helping or hindering their attainment of the changes they desire. Sarah believes that people are naturally adaptive, and psychological distress often occurs when our adaptations no longer work for us in a given situation. Her therapeutic work often involves helping people identify the ways in which their experiences and relationships have influenced how they see and interact with the world, and assisting them in exploring new strategies for coping with their experiences in order to live a valued life.
Both her clinical work and research have focused on highlighting individual strengths while recognizing the systemic and contextual barriers that people encounter. She completed her PhD in Counselling Psychology at the University of British Columbia, where her research focused on Indigenous women’s career decision-making experiences. Sarah also is involved as a facilitator with Wounded Warriors Canada and the Veterans Transition Network, serving first responders and military veterans and their families with group-based trauma treatment programs such as the Trauma Resiliency Program and COPE programs.
Sarah also has experience in conducting psychoeducational and clinical assessments, and is happy to serve Nanaimo and surrounding areas in this regard. Her approach to assessment is both diagnostic and problem-solving, in that the central aim is to help clients identify how they can better meet their educational, personal, and career-related goals within their own context.

The assessment process is designed to answer the questions you have about your child's learning and development, so each process may not look exactly the same. However, the following steps are typically involved:
Once you have decided to move forward with the assessment process, you will book the initial clinical interview, at which time we request a deposit of $1,500. Your child will attend this, as well as any immediate caregivers (e.g. parents). Typically this lasts between 30 and 90 minutes, and is an opportunity for the psychologist to gather more background information and get a sense of your child and the questions you would like answered by the assessment.
Depending on the referral question, your psychologist will likely administer several assessment batteries, or "tests". These typically involve a cognitive and academic battery, which would be administered on separate days, ideally in the morning. Testing can take between 40 minutes to up to 3 hours depending on your child, their attention and energy level, etc. You will likely also receive questionnaires for yourself, possibly your child, and their teacher regarding how they are functioning socially, emotionally, and behaviourally. Additional information will also be gathered as needed and as available, including report cards, previous reports, IEPs, etc. The psychologist may also consult with your child's teachers or other professionals involved in their care and learning.
Once the psychologist has scored the assessments that were administered and reviewed the information provided, they will schedule a debrief meeting (in person, online, or over the phone) to discuss their initial findings and clinical impressions. You will also have the opportunity to provide any updates. At this stage, it may be determined that more information needs to be gathered, or that enough information is available to proceed with the final draft of the report.
You will be provided with an invoice detailing how many hours were spent on the report and for which activities (meetings, report writing, assessment administration, document review, etc). Once the final invoice is paid, the signed report will be released to you.
Assessments are billed at an hourly rate of $240 per hour and are GST exempt. If you have third-party benefits for assessments, you can provide your receipt for reimbursement, however we are unable to direct bill.
